What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files that the sites visited by users send to their terminals, where they are stored before being re-transmitted to the same sites on the next visit. The cookies of the so-called “third parties” are, on the other hand, set by a website other than the one the user is visiting. This is because on each site there may be elements (images, maps, sounds, specific links to web pages of other domains, etc.) that reside on servers other than that of the site visited.

What are cookies used for?

Cookies are used for different purposes: execution of computer authentication, session monitoring, storage of information on specific configurations regarding users who access the server, storage of preferences, etc.

There are different types of cookies:

  • Technicians:  These are cookies that are used to browse or provide a service requested by the user.
They are not used for other purposes and are normally installed directly by the website owner.
  • Analytical:  These are the cookies used to compile site usage statistics.
  • Profiling:  These are the cookies used to track the user’s navigation on the network and create profiles on his tastes, habits, choices, etc.
With these cookies, advertising messages can be transmitted to the user’s terminal in line with the preferences already expressed by the same user while browsing online.
  • Session cookies:  They expire and are deleted at the end of the browsing session (browser closure).
  • Persistent cookies:  They do not expire with the session but remain active even for very long times (months, years) and allow the site to automatically recognize the user and his preferences.

Who installs the cookies?

Cookies can be proprietary, or installed by the site you are visiting, or by third parties, or installed by sites external to the one you are visiting.
For third-party cookies, it is up to the respective owners to obtain consent to use them and give the possibility not to install and / or delete them, while the owner of the site remains the burden of informing the user of the presence of these cookies.
